A living fossil is part of the extant taxon that bears close resemblances to organisms whose details are only known through their fossil records.  

These living fossils exhibit negligible evolution and mutation over the years thus having almost no physical alterations which leads to the misconception that the species have undergone no evolution.  

Some examples of living fossils are Latimeria chalumnae, dawn redwood plant, jurodid beetles and mymarommatid wasps.
