Given info : 0.078 gms of a gaseous hydrocarbon occupy 44.8 ml volume at 1 atm and 273°C. The empirical formula of the hydrocarbon is CH.

To find : the total number of atoms in one molecule of the hydrocarbon is ...

solution : we know, molecular weight = x × empirical weight

= x × (12 + 1) = 13x

using formula, PV = nRT

here pressure, P = 1 atm

Volume, V = 44.8 ml = 0.0448 l

Temperature, T = 273°C = 273 + 273 = 546K

no of moles of hydrocarbon, n = 0.078/13x = 0.006/x

so, 1 atm × 0.0448 L = (0.06)/x mol × 0.082 L.atm/mol/K × 546K

⇒x = 0.006 × 0.082 × 546/0.0448

≈ 6

Therefore the molecular formula of compound is CH and hence total no of atoms in one molecule of hydrocarbon is 12.
