In India, the west flowing rivers make estuaries and the east flowing rivers make deltas.
A delta is an area of low, flat land shaped like a triangle, where a river splits and spreads out into several branches before entering the sea.
An estuary is a partially enclosed coastal body of brackish water with one or more rivers or streams flowing into it, and with a free connection to the open sea.
There are many reasons that the west flowing rivers do not make delta, but estuaries
Deltas are formed due to accumulation of sediments brought by the rivers.
Many west flowing rivers like Narmada, Tapti,Periar etc.passes through rift valleys.
They flow through the areas of hard rocks.
Therefore these rivers contain little amount of silts.
Their areas are smaller and the river covers short distance.
There is a high gradient for the west flowing rivers. Therefore with being very close to coast and with high gradient, there are less chances of rivers getting wide towards the sea unlike east flowing rivers.
More gradient means higher is the velocity of the river.
Therefore west flowing rivers end up forming estuaries rather than deltas. When these fast flowing rivers reach to its mouth it become unable to deposit its silts, due to this reason silts falls in to the sea.
