Complete Question:

The purpose of pentavalent impurity is to

(a) reduce the conductivity

b) increase the number of holes

(c) increase the number of free electrons

(d)create minority carriers

Answer:

(c) Increase the number of free electrons

Explanation:

Semiconductors are substances which conduct electricity when a specific type of impurity is added. The main reason for introducing a pentavalent impurity is that it has five valence electrons and then it binds with four of the atoms present and leaves the fifth electron that becomes a free electron that can now freely move and conduct electricity. To add this type of impurity we add pentavalent elements like Arsenic (As) and phosphorus (P) forming an n- type conductivity. This procedure thus by which we are adding impurities to enhance the conductivity is called doping and the semiconductor is now called doped semiconductor.
