1) Petroleum is a fossil fuel, meaning that it has been created by the decomposition of organic matter over millions of years. Petroleum is formed when large quantities of dead organisms–primarily zooplankton and algae–underneath sedimentary rock are subjected to intense heat and pressure.
2) In India, oil is found in Assam, Gujarat, Mumbai High and in the river basins of Godavari and Krishna.
3) (a). The process of separating the various constituents/ fractions of petroleum is known as refining. It is carried out in a petroleum refinery.At the refinery, the crude oil mixture is 'fractionated' into different components by fractional distillation
b) Petroleum refining is mainly aimed at transforming crude oil into useful goods such as LPG, gasoline, jet fuel, diesel oil, jet fuel and fuel oils.
