The Two Sides of the Tourism Industry

By Michael

Tourism is one of the most popular industries in India. However, every coin has two sides and both the sides hold importance while discussing its entity. On the outer level, tourism might seem beneficial for the people, the nature, the history and the nation’s name, fame and wealth as a whole. However, on further consideration, it can be proved that it has its own share of disadvantages as well.

Firstly, on financial grounds, India depends a lot on the travel expenditures incurred by foreigners, as a source of taxation and as a source of income for the enterprises. Therefore, the development of tourism is often a strategy to encourage a particular region for the purpose of increasing commerce through exporting goods and services. It is popular in India because this industry does not require a lot of literacy and also it yields maximum profits with less investment. It also provides direct employment for the people associated with occupations in bars and hotels. Thanks to it, the average standard of living of people increases well and at the same time, unemployment is on the decrease. However, tourists cause environmental damage through forest fires, destruction of sand dunes and pollution. This, in turn, discourages tourism as increased I pollution disturbs local residents and also it may discourage tourists from further entering the country. The popularity in the industry also gets affected when people cause pollution through littering in the snow peaks of Himalayas as well as in the wide coastline which surrounds l /3′ of the entire country.

" THE TWO SIDES OF TOURISM INDUSTRY "

  • There are always two facets of the same coin. And Indian Tourism is no exception. On one side there are immense potentialities of " Cultural Tourism " . It can foster understanding between people and cultures. This helps tourists to travel to experience local arts, crafts , traditions , cultures , literatures , languages and dances of the region they visit. It gives immense possibilities to the local people to know more closely about the people, their languages and cultures who come from different parts of the world. This inter mingling helps people to develop mutual sympathy and understanding. It reduces prejudices. Moreover, tourism creates a lot of jobs and opportunities to the local people.

  • The other side of the tourism is not so pleasant. Irresponsible tourism can cause cultural and environmental destruction. Let us take the example of Goa in India. Goa has been the ultimate destination for international tourists for a long time. But the cultural invasion of foreign tourists has been disastrous. It has brought nudism, drug addiction , ultra liberal sex behaviour and unrestricted life styles. Unrestricted tourism invaded the tribal culture of some regions to an extent that many tribal communities are fighting even for their identity and recognition. The biggest danger of irresponsible tourism has been the destruction of the environment and natural resources. All  our hill stations have become junkyards and are fast losing their forests and green belts.

  • The only solution of the problem is ' responsible tourism '. It is the kind of tourism that may help to foster natural understanding of different cultures and linguistic groups.
