Percentage of sprite = 14.5%

Given:

  • Tub contains a solution with 83% water and 17% spirit.
  •  10 liters of the solution is removed and replaced with water.
  •  Capacity of tub = 70 liters.

Find:   Proportion of spirit =?

Explanation:

Total solution present = 70 liter.

Water contain in solution = \frac{70\times83}{100} = 58.1 liter.

Spirit contain in solution = \frac{70\times17}{100} = 11.9 liter.

10 liters of the solution is removed.

So amount of spirit removed = \frac{10\times17}{100}= 1.7 liter.

So the remaining spirit in the tube = 11.9 -1.7 = 10.2 liter.

After 10 liter pure water is added solution in the tube =70 liter.

Percentage of spirit for final solution when 10 liter water added

                                                     = 10.2/70×100

                                                      = 14.5%

Hence, the proportion of spirit is 14.5 %.
