Read the following passage carefully
(8 marks)
No one knows exactly from where or when the game of cricket began. Some references say its origins root back to the
1300s, during the reign of King Edward I in Kent England. Others say it was most likely initiated as a children's game
in England in the 1600s, and was played only by children, for many years. It is believed that the game was invented by
children who belonged to the farming families of South East England for recreation. But the origin of the game remains
a mystery
They would play in areas where there was clean ground or where the area had been grazed by sheep A matted lump
of sheep's wool or even a stone or lump of wood, would be used as ball; a stick or some other farm tool would serve as
the bat, and a gate or tree stump would be used for the wicket. The earliest written reference to the game was in 1598,
where it was 'Creekett'. In the 17th century, it slowly became a village game and adults began to take part in it.
In 1706, William Goldwyn is said to have published the first official description of how the game was and how it was
meant to be played. The first book on rules of the game was written in 1744. By this time, it became a common practise
to pitch the ball through the air and not roll it on the ground. The first cricket club was formed in Hambledon, in the
Shire of Oxford, in the 1760s and the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) was founded in 1787.
Today, cricket is one of the most popular sports in the world and is played and watched by millions
