(02.03 MC) Barbara has a part-time lawn-mowing job. The table below shows the amount of money Barbara earned for different numbers of hours of work: Barbara's Earnings from Lawn Mowing Number of Hours Worked Money Earned (dollars) 5 40 6 48 8 56 Part A: What are the missing numbers in the table? Show your work. (4 points) Part B: Barbara also works part time at a theme park. The ratio of the number of hours Barbara works at the park to the money she earns in dollars is 1:9. Create a table to show the money earned by Barbara for 5, 6, and 8 hours of work at the theme park. (3 points) Part C: How many more dollars does Barbara earn working at the theme park for 5 hours than mowing lawns for 5 hours? Show your work. (3 points) Your answer:

Answer:

Part A: The first answer is 64. I figured this out by doing this: 5x8 is 40 then 6x8 is 48 so the table is going by the number of hours work x8. The second answer is 7 because 7x8 equals 56.

Part B:  I did this by doing 5x9 is 45 then 6x9 is 54 then 8x9 is 72 so that's how I got my answers.

The answers to the provided questions are as follows -

  • A) It is not clear from the problem statement where the missing numbers are in the table. Hence, we assume that Barbara charges the same hourly rate for all mowing jobs, then the red numbers are the numbers that were missing.
  • In the table of lawn mowing, we can obtain the money earned by multiplying the number of hours by 8. Each number in the dollars column is 8 times the number in the hours column.
  • B) In the next table of working in the theme parks we can obtain the money earned by multiplying the number of hours by 9. Each number in the dollars column is 9 times the number in the hours column. The money earned by Barbara for 5, 6, and 8 hours of work at the theme park is 45, 54, and 72.
  • C) (5*9)-(5*8)= 45-40= 5. Barbara earns 5 dollars more at the theme park for 5 hours’ work than she does mowing lawns. The difference in rate is $1 per hour, so the earning difference will be $5 for 5 hours.
