Zeros at the start of a field appear to be omitted in Data Exports
Knowledge Article Number 000336106
Description
When you perform an export, either through Data Loader, Data Exports, or the export Reports function, you may notice that the leading zeroes in a field appear to have been removed from the field value. For example, a zip code 01234 may appear as 1234.
This is due to the way spreadsheet programs such as Microsoft Excel read numbers and display, and can be fixed by formatting the affected cell. See also: Import and export address fields that begin with a zero or contain a plus symbol
However, if the affected data/column is not a zip code and the number of digits varies, the above recommendation won't be much help. In this case, please follow these steps on how to retain leading zeroes from your extracted file.
Resolution
Open Microsoft Excel
Go to Data | Click "From Text"
Browse and Select your extracted csv file | Import
Select Delimited | Uncheck Tab and Check Comma | Next
Select the impacted column under Data Preview | Select Text as the Column data format
Repeat the last step for any other impacted columns
Click Finish
