03. (a) An ice skater A of total mass 65 Kg (including his helmet) slides freely on a frictionless frozen lake in a
straight line with a velocity of 2 ms-1. While moving A throws his helmet weighing 5 kg horizontally with
a velocity of 4 ms-1 in a direction perpendicular to his direction of motion.

(1) Find the magnitude of the resultant velocity of A after throwing the helmet.

Explanation:

mass of boy with helmet=65kg

mass of boy without helmet=60kg

momentum of boy with helmet=65*2=130kgm/s eq1

momentum of boy without helmet=60v eq2

momentum of helmet=5*4=20kgm/s eq3

using law of conservation of momentum

eq1=eq2+eq3

130=20+60v

60v=110

v=1.83m/s
