Usually all solvent volume rises with increase in temperature, but not Universal Solvent.

Water is considered as universal solvent.

  • If we rise the temperature from 0° C - 4° C, the volume of water will decrease and the density will increase.
  • If we rise the temperature beyond 4° C, the volume of water will increase in a normal way like other solvents and the density decreases.
  • It happens in a parabolic order.
  • This happens because of the Hydrogen bonds present in the water molecule.

For the second part of the question,

Surface area(A) = 3.6 × 10 m²

Temperature increase (dT) = 200° C

Area increase (dA) = 1.1 cm²

                              = 1.1/10⁴ m²

              From the formula,

        \alpha = \frac{1}{A} \frac{dA}{dT}    α = coefficient of areal expansion of metal

We can easily calculate the value of coefficient of areal expansion of metal.
