Before the French revolution in 1789, there were three main divisions in French society-

1. First Estate -

It included Clergy. The priests of the Church were from this group. They had a fine amount of land under authority.

These were same like the Brahmins of Ancient India.

2. Second Estate-

It included nobility . The people who were rulers and

soldiers were in this estate. They also had a good amount of land under authority.

These were same like Kshatriya in ancient India.

3. Third Estate-

The largest proportion of people in French were from this estate. These were merchants , peasants and craftsperson etc. They had 80% of population approximately but it owned 10% of total land.

These were like the Vaishya and Shudra people in ancient India.
