  • Chandragupta Basic
  • Battle of Kalinga
  • Kautilya

  • Chandragupta, also spelled Chandra Gupta, also called Chandragupta Maurya or Maurya, (died c. 297 BCE, Shravanbelagola, India), founder of the Mauryan dynasty (ruled c. 321–c. 297 BCE) and the first emperor to unify most of India under one administration. He is credited with saving the country from maladministration and freeing it from foreign rule. Later, in mourning for his famine-stricken people, he fasted to death.
  • The Mauryan Empire at the time of Chandragupta Maurya's death included most of present-day India with the southern regions and Kalinga remaining independent. Kalinga was well geographically located with trade routes leading to Southeast Asia. It had many important ports and a strong navy. A powerful state on the fringes of the Mauryan Empire would be problematic because it could disrupt the lines of communication between the Mauryan capital of Pataliputra and its possessions in the central Indian peninsula. Kalinga was once under the rule of the Nanda Empire until it fell in 321 BC. Chandragupta Maurya tried to conquer the state but failed. His grandson Ashoka would continue the conquest of Kalinga after coming to the throne.
  • Chanakya (c. 350-275 BCE, also known as Kautilya and Vishnugupta) was the prime minister during the reign of Chandragupta Maurya (c. 321-c.297 BCE), the founder of the Mauryan Empire (322-185 BCE). He is best known as the author of the political treatise Arthashastra, which he wrote as a guide for the young Chandragupta on how to rule effectively.
