Here, as particle is travelling in a straight line, displacement =distance

Let, total time taken be 2t

Then displacement in first half time is v2*t

displacement in second half time is v1*t

Total displacement is v2t+v1t

Total time taken is t+t =2t

Average velocity = (v2t+v1t)/2t

=((v2+v1)t)/2t

=(v1+v2)/2
