Solution:

2(y + 3) = 5 \\ 2y + 6 = 5 \\ 2y =  - 1 \\ y =  \dfrac{ - 1}{2}

Verification:

2(  \dfrac{ - 1}{2}  + 3)  = 5 \\ \\   \cancel2( \dfrac{ - 1 + 6}{ \cancel 2} ) = 5 \\  - 1 + 6 = 5 \\ 5 = 5
