Tip : Open the brackets carefully keeping the signs in mind and perform the calculation.

Solution :

After opening the brackets we get,

1 +  \sqrt{2}  + 1 -  \sqrt{2}

Therefore, our answer is 2.

2 can also be written as 2/1 , which satisfies the definition of a rational number( a number that can be represented as the form p/q of two integers ,such that q ≠ 0 is a rational number ) .
