Final answer:  r = 2/3

Given that: We are given 1,2/3 ,4/9 , _______

To find: We have to find r.

Explanation:

  • Any terms of the series after the first term in that series is obtained by multiplying the preceding term by a constant number called the common ratio then the series is said to be in geometric progression GP. Common ratio is denoted by the letter r which is a non-zero number.
  • GP is represented by p, pr, pr2, pr3, pr4,…. with common ratio r.
  • To find the common ration we divide any of the succeeding term  by its preceding term.
  • Here given sequence is 1, 2/3, 4/9.....which are in GP.
  • The common ratio r = (4/9) / (2/3)

            = (4*3) / (9*2)

            = 12 / 18

            = 2/3

Or

r = (2/3) / 1 = 2/3

  • In both case r = 2/3. So given sequence is in GP.
