Step-by-step explanation:

27x + 31y= 85 —(i)

31x +27y= 89 —(ii)

thus, on (i) + (ii) we get,

58x +58y= 174

or, 58(x +y)= 174

or,29( x+y)= 67

or, x+y = 67/29—(I)

Again, on (ii) - (i) we get,

31x -27x+27y-31y=89 -85

=>4x -4y=4

=>4(x-y) = 4

So, x-y =1—(II)

ON ADDING (I) & (II),

2x = 1 +(67/29)

therefore, x = {1+(67/29)}÷2

and, y= [{1 +(67/29)}÷2] -1
