1+3+5+⋯+(2k−1)=k2

we need to prove that the result is also true for n = k + 1, that is

1+3+5+⋯+(2k−1)+(2k+1)=(k+1)2

by our assumption

1+3+5+⋯+(2k−1)=k2

adding 2 k + 1 on both sides

1+3+5+⋯+(2k−1)+(2k+1)=k2+(2k+1)=(k+1)2
