1.4 Shape and Size of the Earth
The Earth is round, like a sphere. The poles are flattened and the Earth at the centre is bulging
out. This shape is known as an oblate spherold. Due to this shape, the vertical distance of the
Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole is 40,008 km while the horizontal distance across
the equator is about 40,075 km.

Explanation:
Using those measurements, the equatorial circumference of Earth is about 24,901 miles (40,075 km). However, from pole-to-pole — the meridional circumference — Earth is only 24,860 miles (40,008 km) around. This shape, caused by the flattening at the poles, is called an oblate spheroid.
