From given, we have,

1/2 of a ship's crew are deck officers, 1/4 are engineers and stewards, and the rest are sailors.

Let "x" be the fraction of sailors of a ship's crew.

→ 1= 1/2 + 1/4 + x

1 = 3/4 + x

x = 1 - 3/4

..x = 1/4

Therefore, there are 1/4 of a ship's crew are sailors.

Given that, there are 48 crew members.

Hence, the number of sailors on board the ship is given by,

→ 48 x 1/4 = 12

Therefore, there are 12 sailors on board the ship.
