1,8,5,10,9,12

The series has two starting terms 1 and 8

starting from 1 every alternate term has a difference of 4 and

the series starting from 8 every alternate term has a difference of 2,

1 + 4 = 5

5 + 4 = 9

and

8 + 2 = 10

10 + 2 = 12

So the next term will be,

9 + 4 = 13

Hence, the next number in the series is 13.
