1/8 part of pencil is black, 1/2 part of the remaining is white. if the remaining part of the pencil is blue and the length of this blue part is 3 1/2 cm. find the length of the pencil

1/2 part of the remaining is white

3 1/2 part is blue

so the length of pencil will be--

if 7/16 = 3.5 cm 
....16/16 = x 

x = 3.5 / (7/16) x = 3.5 / 0.4375 

x = 8 cm 

verify: 

1/8 is black.... = 1 cm 
half of 7/8 = 7/16 = 3.5 cm white 
and remaining 7/16 = 3.5 cm blue

$\small \red{as \: per \: que. \: portion(length) \: of \: black \: in \: pencil} = \frac{x}{8}$

$remaining \: portion = x - \frac{x}{8} = \frac{7x}{8}$

$so \: white \: portion = \frac{1}{2} \times \frac{7x}{8} = \frac{7x}{16}$

$so \: remaining \: portion = \frac{7x}{8} - \frac{7x}{16} = \frac{7x}{16}$
