Let the total no.of passengers travelling by the train be x
then x/8 of them are children
given that there were 40 children
⇒ x/8 = 40
⇒ x = 40×8
∴ x = 320
∴ The total no.of passengers = 320
No.of adults = total - no.of children
= 320 - 40
= 280
∴ There were 280 adults in that train.
