(1) A 10 metre long rope is to be cut into two pieces and a square is to be
made using each. The difference in the areas enclosed must be
14 square metres. How should it be cut?

Let,

First Piece is = x m

Second Piece is = 10 - x m

So,

area of first square - area of second square = 14

x2 - (10 - x)2 = 14

x2 - [ 100 - 20x + x2] = 14

x2 - 100 + 20x - x2 = 14

20x = 14 + 100

x = 114/20

x = 5.7 m

So,

First Piece is = x = 5.7 m

Second Piece = 10 - x = 4.3 m
