Solution:

i) a² + 1/a² - 3

= a² + ( 1/a )² - 2 × a × 1/a - 1

= ( a - 1/a )² - 1²

= ( a - 1/a - 1 )( a - 1/a + 1 )

ii ) a²b² + 8ab - 9

= ( ab )² + 2×ab×4 + 16 -25

= ( ab )² + 2×ab×4 + 4² - 5²

= ( ab + 4 )² - 5²

= ( ab + 4 + 5 )( ab + 4 - 5 )

= ( ab + 9 )( ab - 1 )

2 ) a²b² + 8ab - 9

==> ( ab )² + 2×ab×4 + 16 -25

==> ( ab )² + 2×ab×4 + 4² - 5²

==> ( ab + 4 )² - 5²

==> ( ab + 4 + 5 )( ab + 4 - 5 )
