Answer :

Time taken by boy to travel any side of the square = 5s

★ Average velocity is defined as the ratio of total displacement to the total time.

It is a vector quantity having both magnitude as well as direction.

SI unit : m/s

(A) Av. velocity along A to B :

  • Displacement = 5 m
  • Time = 5 s

➝ Vav = 5/5

Vav = 1 m/s

(B) Av. velocity along path ABC :

  • Displacement = 5√2 m
  • Time = 2 × 5 = 10 s

➝ Vav = 5√2/10

➝ Vav = √2/2

Vav = 1/√2 m/s

(C) Av. velocity along path ABCD :

  • Displacement = 5 m
  • Time = 3 × 5 = 15 s

➝ Vav = 5/15

➝ Vav = 1/3

Vav = 0.33 m/s

(D) Av. velocity along path ABCDA :

  • Displacement = 0 m
  • Time = 4 × 5 = 20 s

➝ Vav = 0/20

Vav = 0 m/s
