Question :- Leo is 8 years older than Kat. Five years ago Kat is one-third as old as Leo. What are their present ages ?

Answer :-

Let us assume that, Present age of kat is x years.

so,

→ Leo present age = (x + 8) years.

then,

→ 5 years ago, kat was = (x - 5) years old.

→ 5 years ago, Leo was = (x + 8) - 5 = (x + 3) years old.

A/q,

→ Kat 5 years ago = (1/3) of Leo was .

→ (x - 5) = (1/3)(x + 3)

→ 3(x - 5) = (x + 3)

→ 3x - 15 = x + 3

→ 3x - x = 3 + 15

→ 2x = 18

→ x = 9

therefore,

→ Present age of kat = x = 9 years. (Ans.)

Present age of leo = (x + 8) = 9 + 8 = 17 years. (Ans.)
