1. A farmer can reap a field in 10 days while his wife can do it in 8 days (she does not waste time in smoking). If they work together, in how much time can they reap the field?

The farmer takes 10 days to reap the harvest while his wife does the same work in 8 days. That is to say the farmer does 1/10th of the work in a day while his wife does 1/8th of the work. Together they do (8+10)/(10*8) = 18/80 or 9/40th of the work.
