1) A grandfather is ten times older than his granddaughter. He is also 54 years older than her. Find their present ages.

=>A grandfather is ten times older than his granddaughter 


=> y =10x

=>he is also 54 years older than her


=>y = 54 +x
their ages  

=>10x +54+x

=>10x - x = 54


=>9x = 54

=>x = 54/9


=>x = 6 years old


since x is  10y


=>6*10

=>60 years

∴ age of grandfather is 60 and age of granddaughter is 6
