Visible light, also known as white light, consists of a collection of component colors. These colors are often observed as light passes through a triangular prism. Upon passage through the prism, the white light is separated into its component colors - red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet.

A ray of white light is spread out into a series of colored bands of visible light are called Spectrum. (option - b)

  • When white light is passed through a glass prism, the light experiences refraction i.e. bending of light due to a change in the medium.
  • Due to the property or permittivity of the media, the speed of monochromatic light changes while entering from air to a different medium like glass.
  • Light constitutes of different color lights or rays of different wavelengths which experience bending to different extents.
  • This leads to the splitting of white light into its constituent color rays as it passes through the glass prism. This phenomenon is called  Spectrum.
