1. A steamer goes downstream and covers the distance between two
ports in 3 hours. It covers the same distance in 5 hours when it goes
upstream. If the stream flows at 3 km/hr, then find what is the speed
of the steamer upstream?

Answer:

Let the speed of the streamer in still water be x km/hr

Speed of the stream=3 km/hr

It is given that while going downstream,the streamer takes 3 hours to cover the distance between two port.

Speed of the steamer downstream=(x+3) km/hr

Dustance covered in 1 hour=(x+3) km

Distance covered in 3 hr=3(x+3)km

Distance between two ports=(x+3) km

It is given that while going upstream,the streamer takes 5 hours to cover the distance.

Speed of the streamer upstream=(x-3) km /hr

Distance covered in 1 hr = (x-3)km

Distance covered in 5hr=5(x-3) km

Distance between two ports in this case =5(x-3) km

The distance between two ports is the same

From 1 and 2 ,we get,

3(x+3)=5(x-3)

3x+9=5x-15

3x-5x=-15-9

2x=24

x=12

The speed of streamer in still water=12 km/hr
