1. A submarine emits a sonar pulse,
which returns from an
underwater cliff in 1.02 s. If the
speed of sound in salt water is
1531 m/s, how far away is the
cliff?

t=1.02 s

V=1531 m/s

Let, the distance of the cliff = d

and the distance traveled by sound =2d

we know,

2d= V×t

=>d=(V×t)/2

=>d=[(1531×1.02)/2] m

=>d=[1561.62/2] m

=>d=780.81 m

Ans: the cliff is at 780.81 m distance.

hope it will be helpful for you

Given :-

  • Time (t) = 1.02 sec

  • Speed (v) = 1531 m/s.

To Find :-

  • Distance (d) = ?

Solution :-

We know that,

\orange{\bigstar}\:{\underline{\boxed{\bf\red{v=\dfrac{2d}{t}}}}}

\rm\longrightarrow\:1531=\dfrac{2d}{1.02}

\rm\longrightarrow\:2d=1531\times\:\dfrac{1.02}{100}

\rm\longrightarrow\:2d=\dfrac{1531\times\:51}{50}

\rm\longrightarrow\:d=\dfrac{1531\times\:51}{2\times\:50}

\rm\longrightarrow\:d=780.81\:m

Hence,the required distance will be 780.81 m.

Reflection of sound :-The bouncing back of sound wave in the same medium after striking a hard surface is known as reflection of sound.

  • Sound is a form of energy which produces sensation of hearing.

  • Speed of sound is increase with increase in temperature.

  • It is produced due to vibration.
