its a NCERT question u can evaluate it only by mathematical relationship,just try to see if u can equate them or not,if not ask an elder or teacher for help

3y-3 = -12
when we put y = -3
=3(-3) - 3 = -12
= -9 - 3 = -12
that gives, -12 = -12
Therefore , -3 is solution of the equation.☺
