Adolescence is the time between being a child and a mature adult, that is the period of time during which a person grows into an adult, but are emotionally not mature. In the United States, adolescence is usually considered to begin around the teenage years of 11-13, and end around 17-21. [1]In the English language, adolescents (people going through adolescence) are frequently called "teenagers" or "teens", which comes from the end of the English words "thirteen" to "nineteen".

The ages when one is no longer a child, and when one becomes an adult, vary by culture. In many cultures they are marked by rites of passage. The word comes from the Latin verb adolescere meaning "to grow up." During this time, a person's body, emotions and academic standing change a lot. When adolescence starts, in America, children usually finish elementary school and enter secondary education, such as middle school or high school.

During this period of life, most children go through the physical stages of puberty, which often begin before a person has reached the age of 13. Most cultures think of people as becoming adults at various ages of the teenage years. For example, Jewish tradition thinks that people are adults at age 13, and this change is celebrated in the Bar Mitzvah(for boys) and the Bat Mitzvah (for girls) ceremony. Usually, there is a formal age of majority when adolescents formally (under the law) become adults.

Adolescence

Louise J. Kaplan has rightly and very wisely remarked, “Adolescence
represents an inner emotional upheaval, a struggle between the eternal human
wish to cling to the past and the equally powerful wish to get on with the
future.” It is quite true that adolescence is the pivotal phase in any human’s
development and growth. It is crucial transitional period from childhood into
adulthood. Crucial physical, emotional, mental, and attitudinal changes take
place in this period. This is the age of stress and aggression. Psychologists
consider this phase in human development as the most vulnerable period. If not
handled properly, it can result in many unwanted and undesirable complications.

This phase is the phase of emotional turmoil in which an adolescent feels
quite confused. Owing to puberty and the related development in the emotional
system, at times they don’t know how to react to or handle some situations.
This is the most vulnerable phase in which they can fall prey to sexual
exploitation and high-risk behaviours. Out of curiosity and lack of counseling,
they can take up smoking, drugs or other delinquencies.

The parents, teachers, and other agencies that have the
responsibilities to look after their healthy growth and development must ensure
they get healthy environment, training, and skills to be able to cope
successfully with the many complexities and stresses of this phase.

I hope it help you
