QUESTION :-

1. What is a volcano ? Describe the various types of volcanoes with examples of each .

ANSWER :-

A volcano is a land-form, a mountain, where molten rocks erupt through the surface of the planet. The volcano mountain opens downwards to a pool of molten rocks below the surface of the earth.

Types of Volcanoes

Volcanoes are grouped into four types:

  • Cinder cones
  • Composite volcanoes
  • Shield volcanoes
  • Lava volcanoes

  1. Cinder Cones :- Cinder cones are circular or oval cones made up of small fragments of lava from a single vent that have been blown up. Cinder cones result from eruptions of mostly small pieces of scoria and pyroclastics that build up around the vent. Example Parícutin in 1994
  2. Composite volcanoes are steep-sided volcanoes composed of many layers of volcanic rocks, usually made from high-viscosity lava, ash and rock debris. These types of volcanoes are tall conical mountains composed of lava flows and other ejecta in alternate layers, the strata that give rise to the name. Examples of composite volcanoes include Mount Fuji (Japan), Mount St Helens (USA) and Mount Pinatubo (Philippines).
  3. Shield volcanoes are volcanoes shaped like a bowl or shield in the middle with long gentle slopes made by basaltic lava flows. These are formed by the eruption of low-viscosity lava that can flow a great distance from a vent. Examples of shield volcanoes include Mount Kilauea and Maunaloa on Hawaii.
  4. Lava domes are formed when erupting lava is too thick to flow and makes a steep-sided mound as the lava piles up near the volcanic vent. They are built by slow eruptions of highly viscous lava. An example is Puy de Dome in the Auvergne region of France which last erupted over 1 million years ago.

QUESTION

2. What are the effects of earthquake?

ANSWER :-

Earthquake environmental effects are the effects caused by an earthquake, including surface faulting, tsunamis, soil liquefactions, ground resonance, landslides and ground failure, either directly linked to the earthquake source or provoked by the ground shaking.

QUESTION

3. Why does the earthquake belt of the world coincide with the distribution of volcanoes?

ANSWER

The earthquake belts coincide with the volcanic belts because both of the natural phenomena are associated with the tectonic activities and where there is a volcano the energy released will give rise to the earthquake, and where there is an earthquake sometimes there can be a volcanic eruption
