leaves are reduced to spines in a cactus , so that the water does not get evaporated with the heat of the SUN . They are present in hotdeserts which are scarce in water so in order to reduce the loss of water by Transpiration from the surface of the leaves, its leaves are reduced to spines.

Answer:

Both A and R are correct and, R is the correct explanation of A.

Explanation:

Desert areas have an absolute lack of water, and plants in desert need water to survive. If a lot of water is evaporated through spines due transpiration, all the water present in the fleshy stem of cactus will evaporate and run out of water. It will cause the cactus to decease. Therefore, the leaves of cactus are converted to spines and are very thin.
