1. Biodiversity is the variability among living organisms from all sources, including
terrestrial, marine, and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of
which they are part. It is the incredible, dizzying variety of life that surrounds us,
including all the earth's plants, animals, their habitats, and the natural processes
that connect them.
2. It is clear that biodiversity is the cornerstone of our existence on Earth. It is also
important to conserve biodiversity for the sake of our own curiosity and aesthetic
appreciation. Himalayan mountain range is spectacular in its beauty, but what
would it be without its splendid variety of wildlife and wildflowers? These mountains
are full of biodiversity wonders, many of which are unique to our state.
3. Many medicinal plants are easy to grow in these mountains and have incredible
healing properties. Medicines originating from wild species have saved millions of
lives and alleviated tremendous suffering. Forty percent of all prescriptions are for
medicines that originated from plants and animals. No one knows how many more
cures await discovery, hidden in Earth's poorly studied species.
4. Food shortage is a major concern with the growing population of the planet. There
are 80,000 species of edible plants known on Earth, but 90% of the world's food
comes from a mere 20 of these species. Many unknown edible plant species offer
a tremendous resource of possibilities that could greatly add to the security of our
food. Breeding cultivars with their wild counterparts can also confer resistance to
diseases and increase crop yield. A cultivar is a plant variety which is produced
through artificial selection. They show high nutrients, use efficiency, and play
in nutrient intake efficiency and disease suppression.
