Solution

Verified by Toppr

(i) Molar mass of water (H2O)

Atomic mass of H=1

Atomic mass of O=16

H2O=2×H+1×O

Molar mass of water=2×1+16=18g/mol

(ii) Molar mass of carbon dioxide (CO2)

Atomic mass of C=12

Atomic mass of O=16

CO2=1×C+2×O

Molar mass of CO2=12+2×16=44g/mol

(iii) Molar mass of methane (CH4)

Atomic mass of C=12

Atomic mass of H=1

CH4=1×C+4×H

Molar mass of methane=12+4×1=16g/mo

Answer:

Explanation:

Molecular formula of Water =H20

The atomic mass of Carbon =1

The atomic mass of Oxygen =16

Molecular mass =2× atomic mass of hydrogen + 1× atomic mass of oxygen.

=(2×1)+(1×16) = 2+16 = 18

Hence the relative molecular mass of water =18 g/mol

Molecular formula of carbon dioxide =CO2

The atomic mass of Carbon =12

The atomic mass of Oxygen =16

Molecular mass =1× atomic mass of carbon +2× atomic mass of oxygen.

=(1×12)+(2×16)=44

Hence the relative molecular mass of carbon dioxide =44 g/mol.
