The Yamuna has been reduced to a small stream, draining industrial effluents, sewage, dirt and other toxic

Answer:
The major causes contributing to the pollution of Yamuna are: untreated sewage, industrial effluents, the dumping of garbage, open sewage drains, lack of sufficient sewage treatment plants, soil erosion, open and dead bodies, immersion of idols, Aesthetic activities and pollution
Do you know what actual contribution of Delhi is for polluting the Yamuna? The length of Yamuna from Okhla Barrage to Wazirabad is 22 km, and this portion is solely responsible for the 80% of Yamuna’s Pollution.
The sewage waste contributes the most in polluting the river; Delhi produces 327 Cr. Litters of sewage or water-waste daily. And the combined capacity of all the sewage treatment plants in Delhi is 276 Cr litters per day. Which means 52 Cr litters of sewage enters the river every day.
In summer months the only flow downstream of Wazirabad is of industrial and sewage effluents. Okhla Barrage which is the exit point for the river in Delhi, during the dry months, almost no water is released from these barrages to the downstream Yamuna.
Instead discharges from the Shahdara drain join the river downstream of the barrage, bringing effluents from east Delhi and Noida into the river.
There are many other causes, but waste production by Delhi is the primary cause of the river Yamuna pollution. The capacity of sewage treatment must be increased as quickly as possible to stop these pollutions.
Government steps to clean the Yamuna
Delhi is the largest city situated near the river Yamuna, and while flowing through Delhi Yamuna gets its most of the pollutants.
The government have been promising since the years that they are working to clean Yamuna and Ganga, but there are no visible results. Recently the Union minister of Water Resources and River development Mr Nitin Gadkari has launched nine different programs to cleans the river Yamuna.
Mr Gadkari said that the government is already running an action plan to clean Ganga called Namami Gange. And in order to clean Ganga, the subsidiary river will also be cleaned.
Currently, the government is running a “Yamuna Action Plan” to clean the Yamuna, and the total cost of this project is 1665 Cr. Japan International cooperation is helping the Indian government to make this action plan successful.
The Delhi Jal Board is appointed as a nodal agency to implement this plan. Delhi is divided into three parts for the stage-wise implementation of the Action Plan.
Okhla
Rithala
Kandali
In Okhla zone, a new sewage treatment plant of capacity 54.6 Cr litter will be constructed shortly. The tender is already published for this project. The same way new Sewage Treatment Plant will be created in the Rithali and Kandali sectors as well.
In Kondali a new sewage line of 35 Km will be build whose capacity will be 38 Cr litters.
Apart from this construction of two new West Water Treatment Plant is also sanctioned. These plants will be built on coronation towers, and the capacity will be 31 Cr litters each.
