We have to explain why does 1 cm³ cube block of wood weigh less than 1 cm³ iron.

We know,

  • The density is the ratio of mass and volume of an object. It is intrinsic quantity.
  • Intrinsic is a property of a material. It is independent of how much of a material is and is also independent from the form(solid, liquid or gas) of material. In short, It is a material property and can't be changed just changing the form and quantity.
  • Hence, density is material property.
  • It is to noticed that the density of wood is lower than that of iron.

Now density of wood < density of iron ...(1)

But volume of wood block = volume of iron block = 1 cm³

∵ mass = density × volume

∴ mass of wood block = density of wood × volume of wood = density of wood × 1cm³

mass of iron block = density of iron × volume of iron = density of iron × 1cm³

∴ mass of wood block < mass of iron block  [ from eq (1) ]

Therefore the 1 cm³ cube block of wood weighs less than 1 cm³ block of iron.
