the first reaction is correct for saponification. sodium hydroxide is used as a catalyst.

Saponification: ester reacts in the presence of an acid or a base to give back the alcohol and the carboxylic acid. this reaction is known as saponification because it is used in the preparation of soap.

CH3COOC2H5 ➡️ CH3COOH + C2H5OH

dmacadrish2: Then what about in NCERT text book
serdan2114: u ask ur teachers which one to write if the qn comes
serdan2114: the examiners will look what is given in the textbook.so I think it is better if you write in what is in NCERT
serdan2114: but still ask your teachers

Saponification reaction is CH3COOC2H5+NaOH...

Vishal101100: yes this is right
aariztkhan: Look closely second one is esterification
aariztkhan: i mean which you have said is given in book
aariztkhan: The product of it will be ethanol and ethanoic acid
serdan2114: no the second is not esterification
aariztkhan: CH3COOH +C2H5OH iis esterification
serdan2114: but this is given as the product in the reaction
serdan2114: in esterification this is used as the reactants
aariztkhan: see esterification is reaction between these two and saponification is reaction between the ester and a base to GIVE these two
serdan2114: yes what u said is Correct
