  • If the reporting verb and reported verb are both in the past tense the reported verb jumps over a tense ie the simple past is changed into past perfect and the past continuous into the past perfect continuous.
  • The first person in direct speech is changed into the person of speaker.
  • The second person of direct speech is changed to the person of the person spoken to.
  • The third of the direct speech is not changed.
