Bread and butter are uncountable nouns.

  • Countable nouns are the ones that can be counted whereas uncountable nouns refer to the ones that cannot be counted,i.e. they are mostly qualities, ideas or objects that cannot be counted due to their formation.
  • Bread is an uncountable noun and so we require units for measuring it. We usually use 'loaf' or 'slice' to quantify bread.
  • Also, butter cannot be counted as its an undifferentiated mass. Similarly, milk, tea, sand, clay are all uncountable.
  • Examples of countable nouns are banana, table, chair, pen, fruits, vegetables, etc.

Uncountable Nouns

  • Bread and butter are uncountable nouns.

  • Common noun is divided into two parts and they are 1. Countable Noun and 2. uncountable Noun.

  • 'Countable Nouns' are nouns which can be easily counted. (Only common nouns are countable.) Examples: cat, dog, pen, boy, girl etc.

  • And 'Uncountable Nouns' are nouns which are impossible to calculate. Examples: bread and butter are uncountable. We cannot usually say “two breads” or five breads because 'bread' is uncountable. We can only measure 'butter' but not count. More examples: A lot of books, some sugar, some water
