approaching. It is the conversion of this monstrous creature that is the theme of Dickens's
Christmas fantasy.
6 The rest of the story is worked out through visions imposed upon Scrooge. He sits alone in his
dismal house, barricaded against the world when suddenly at midnight there is a deep rumbling
and a clanking of chains. A scared Scrooge is visited by the three spirits of past, present and
future. Scrooge can no longer face the bitter truth that dawned upon him by the image of a figure
like himself dying alone and forsaken by all. He wakes up in sweat to realize that he is alive and
still has an opportunity to atone for his sins.
Next, we have a reformed Scrooge spending money by ordering roasted turkey for the poor
families. The miser begins to enjoy charity. He chuckles as he pays for the turkey and the cab. He
