The man bought 19 coconuts, 80 lemons, and 1 banana.

Given

  • 1 coconut costs 5 rupees
  • 20 lemons cost 1 Rupee
  • 1 banana costs 1 Rupee
  • A man bought 100 things for Rs. 10 from the shop

To Find

The number of coconuts and bananas and lemons he bought.

Solution

Let the no. of coconut bought be x

Let the no. of lemon bought be 20y

Let the no. of bananas bought be z

Now,

  • 1 coconut costs 5 rupees
  • 20 lemons cost 1 Rupee
  • 1 banana costs 1 Rupee

The man bought 100 items with 100 rupees

now,

No. of items can be expressed as

x + 20y + z = 100

The cost of items can be expressed as

5x + y + z = 100                [Since 20 lemons cost Rs. 1 20y lemons will

                                            cost Rs. y]

Therefore,

5x + y + z = x + 20y + z

or, 4x - 19y = 0

or, x = 19y/4

Since x, y, and z have to be whole numbers greater than 1,

the minimum value of y has to be 4

Using this we see

y =4, or no. of lemons = 4 X 20 = 80

x = 19 or, no. of coconut = 19

According to this

no. of bananas should be

100 - (80 + 19)

= 100 - 99

= 1

Now let us see how much this costs.

Coconuts cost Rs. 5 X 19 = Rs. 95

Lemons cost Rs. 1 X 4 = Rs. 4

Bananas cost Rs. 1 X 1 = Rs. 1

Adding all these up gives us Rs. 100

Hence, the man bought 19 coconuts, 80 lemons, and 1 banana.
