The students (i) were talking as Miss Sarkar (ii) entered the classroom. Then in a loud voice, (iii) she said 'Good Morning' and (iv) glanced quickly around the room.  All the children (v) watched her intently to find out what sort of a person she (vi) was. "I suppose you (vii) want to know my name", she said. But (viii) before she could tell them, someone in the class yelled out, "You are Miss Sarkar".

  • The verb should agree with the subject. Since students are plural, the plural verb were is used.
  • The verb entered is used in the past participle form.
  • The teacher is addressed as Miss. Hence, being a female, she is used
  • The verb watched is used in the past participle form because the children had just watched after the teacher entered.
  • Since the verb denotes a singular noun (teacher), was is used
  • Since the student knew her name earlier, the student yelled her name before she could tell.
