1. Describe the extent and location of the coastal plains of India.
Answers
A coastal plain is flat, low-lying land adjacent to a sea coast. ... The Coastal Plains of India lie on either side of the Peninsular Plateau, along the western and eastern coasts of India. They extend for about 6,150 km from the Rann of Kutch in the west to West Bengal in the east.
Answer:
India is a nation that is surrounded on three of its sides by the sea. In India, the coastal plains are situated in the west and east of the region. The coastal plains in India stretch up to 7516.6 km and are of two kinds:
1) Eastern Coastal Plains of India
2) Western Coastal Plains of India
Eastern Coastal Plains of India:
From the north, this eastern coastal plain starts with the plains created by the Subarnarekha River, which stretches south to Kanyakumari. Thus, it extends for almost 1500 km, almost 100 km in width. The vast blue waters of the Bay of Bengal are to the east of this plain, and the remains of the Eastern Ghat hills are to the west of the plain.
Western Coastal Plains of India:
It ranges from the north of the Rann of Kachchh to the south of Kanyakumari. The steep slopes of the Western Ghat border it to the east, and the Arabian Sea lies to the west. This western coastal plain is narrower in contrast to the East Coastal Plain. The western coastal plain gradually becomes narrower from the Kachchh coast to Kanyakumari, where, unlike the eastern coastal plain with broad rivers and their big mouths or large deltas, the western coast has a short river that drains into the Arabian Sea without creating any deltas, descending quickly from the western slopes of the Western Ghat.
Note: Importance of coastal plains:
1) In India, the coastal plains are largely covered by fertile soil that is best for cultivation. The main crop that is grown in these regions is rice.
2) In carrying out trade, the large and small ports along the Indian coastline help.
3) It is said that the sedimentary rocks of these coastal plains contain significant mineral oil deposits that can be used as a source of marine economic activity.
