In earlier times people used different parts of the body to measure length. The length of an object was measured by using handspan, cubit (arm length), pace and fathom (length of outstretched arm). These are known as traditional units.

Handspan, cubit, pace and other units based on the length of body parts are not accurate and reliable. They cannot be used as standard units of measurements as the length of body parts varies from persons to persons. Therefore, people realised the need of standard units for measurement.
